On Sunday afternoon, May 22, 2011, a devastating EF-5 multi-vortex tornado ripped through Joplin, MO and killed 162 people and hundreds of animals and injured over 1,000 people making it one of the most deadly tornado’s in US history. The funnel was over ¾ of a mile wide and was on the ground for 32 minutes covering 7 miles and destroying or damaging over 7,500 homes and 500 businesses; including the hospital and seven schools.
The debris from the storm may be cleared, but the cost to re-build Joplin, MO will exceed $3 Billion and take many, many years. The People of Joplin still need our help. The World Record Basketball Game is a creative benefit event designed to help St. Louis express our admiration, respect and support for the People of Joplin. The game will attempt to establish a new World Record for the Longest Basketball Marathon Game ever played. The current official record is 108 hours. However, a group in Utah has played 109 hours and has applied for recognition from Guinness. In response, our game will be played for no less than 110 hours. The game is being played in tandem with- and across the street from the NCAA Basketball Tournament Midwest Regionals at the Edward Jones Dome during the Madness of March when awareness and enthusiasm for basketball is at its peak. We hope our event inspires the region to support Joplin through us while the NCAA field is whittled from the 16 sweetest to the 4 final teams.
Every single dollar raised during this event will be distributed by the Joplin Chamber of Commerce to individuals, families and businesses whose property losses were either under-insured or not covered by insurance companies or federal disaster assistance.
The Joplin Chamber of Commerce is a US Registered 501(c)(3) and is 5-star rated
